Jane's approach to psychotherapy, which emphasises the mind, body, and spirit, is reflective of a holistic approach to mental health and well-being. This holistic approach acknowledges that individuals are complex beings, and their mental and emotional health is influenced by various interconnected factors. Jane is trained in a variety of evidence-based therapies including EMDR, Ego State Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, EFT, & CBT. Jane's therapy interventions are informed by Attachment theory.

What is EMDR therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a technique used to help alleviate unpleasant feelings and thoughts associated with trauma. It is a hands-on, practical, and research-based approach that helps people recover from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic.

Jane is an Accredited EMDR Practitioner and also a member of the Australian EMDRAA (The EMDR Association of Australia).

EMDR

Possible symptoms of trauma and PTSD:

Re-experiencing of symptoms: intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks

  • Avoidance/Numbing Symptoms: efforts to avoid trauma related thoughts and feelings (alcohol or drug use), efforts to avoid trauma related activities (places and people), forgetting or dulling trauma related memories, feeling detached or being estranged from relationships, restricted range of emotions (not letting yourself, or unable to feel), sense of foreshortened future
  • Hyper-arousal symptoms: Insomnia, Irritability, difficulty concentrating, hyper-vigilance,      exaggerated startle response

Using EMDR in Counselling and Psychotherapy

What we will never do in therapy:

  • Go in a direction you are unwilling to go.
  • Trauma work is always guided by you, the client. You have complete control over the speed and direction of any work we do together.
  • I will check in often and find out how you’re travelling. My first priority is to make sure you feel in control and you feel safe.

Ways we may work together:

A little bit of talk therapy/ A little bit of EMDR

Evidence-based treatment

  •   EMDR is often used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it has also been used to address a range of other mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and phobias. Its effectiveness has been supported by numerous research studies.  .The EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) is a professional association where EMDR practitioners and researchers set standards for the clinical use of EMDR therapy for its members. EMDR is designated as an effective treatment by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Australian Phoenix Australia – Centre for Post-traumatic Mental Health, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and many other international health agencies. This powerful psychotherapy approach has helped over an estimated two million people of all ages relieve many types of psychological distress. This website provides information to the greater EMDR community including clinicians, researchers, and the public that our members serve.
