What is EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and alleviate distressing emotions and thoughts associated with trauma. This structured, hands-on approach has been extensively researched and is highly effective in treating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic.

Jane is an Accredited EMDR Practitioner and a member of the EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA). Her expertise in EMDR enables her to support individuals in processing traumatic experiences, fostering emotional healing, and enhancing overall well-being.

Possible symptoms of trauma and PTSD:

Re-experiencing Symptoms:

  • Intrusive memories
  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks

Avoidance/Numbing Symptoms:

  • Efforts to avoid trauma-related thoughts and feelings (e.g., alcohol or drug use)
  • Efforts to avoid trauma-related activities, places, or people
  • Forgetting or dulling trauma-related memories
  • Feeling detached or estranged from relationships
  • Restricted range of emotions (inability or reluctance to feel)
  • Sense of a foreshortened future (feeling as though life will be cut short or lacks purpose)

Hyper-arousal Symptoms:

  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Hyper-vigilance (being constantly on guard)
  • Exaggerated startle response

These symptoms can significantly impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall well-being. Effective therapeutic interventions, such as EMDR, DBT, and trauma-informed approaches, can help individuals process their experiences and develop coping strategies for long-term recovery

What We Will Never Do in Therapy:

  • Push you in a direction you are unwilling to go.
  • Force trauma work at a pace that does not feel right for you.

Therapy is always guided by you, the client. You have complete control over the speed and direction of our work together. My priority is to ensure that you feel safe, supported, and in control at all times. I will regularly check in with you to see how you’re feeling and adjust our approach as needed.

Ways We May Work Together:

  • A combination of talk therapy and EMDR
  • A collaborative, trauma-informed approach tailored to your needs
  • Gentle, client-led exploration at a pace that feels safe for you

Your healing journey is unique, and I am here to support you in a way that feels right for you.

EMDR: A Proven Approach to Healing

While EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is widely recognized as an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), it is also used to address a range of other mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and phobias. Its effectiveness is well-supported by numerous research studies.

The EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) is a professional body dedicated to maintaining high standards in the clinical application of EMDR therapy. It provides guidance and resources for practitioners and researchers, ensuring best practices in the field.

EMDR has been recognized as an evidence-based treatment by leading health organizations, including:

  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • Phoenix Australia – Centre for Post-traumatic Mental Health
  • U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs & Department of Defense
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Other international health agencies

This powerful psychotherapy approach has helped an estimated two million people worldwide overcome various forms of psychological distress. The EMDR community, including clinicians, researchers, and the public, continues to expand awareness and accessibility of this transformative therapy.
